Madison students have spent the first trimester of school learning music for spring Show Choir competitions. Area residents will get their first chance to hear their music on Monday at the Madison High School fall concert.
The concert begins at 7 p.m. in the MHS auditorium. Also featured will be local participants in All-State Chorus and a special performance by pianist Amy Shan.
The Show Choir is back from a year's reprieve. In 2008-09, Madison choir director Jenn Richards said that there wasn't enough student interest for Show Choir, so students performed as a Jazz Choir instead.
This year, however, students expressed interest in competing as a Show Choir, which means not only learning music for the contest but also choreography. Richards said that Monday's concert will feature the Show Choir music without choreography.
This year's Show Choir is working on choral highlights from the musical "Chicago." Choreography will be taught by Joy Hawkes.
Show Choir contests are slated for next spring with the first on March 13 in Sioux Falls. Madison is slated to compete in four contests. A local performance of the entire show will be presented at "Dance and Dessert Night" in March.
Shan will be performing "Milonga del Angel," which is an Argentine tango. She is a piano student of Colleen Tucker in Madison. She will be playing music that she will perform for the South Dakota Music Teachers Association piano contest this weekend.
