Faced with no warranty coverage on the Gateway Tablet PCs currently used by high school students, Madison Central School officials are encouraging parents to get personal insurance coverage if they are relying on the school district protection plan. At Monday's meeting, board members heard an update from Rob Honomichl and Todd Beutler about the effects of the Gateway/MPC company liquidation. Ultimately, there is a loss in warranty coverage for accidental damage. Madison High School purchased Tablet PCs through Gateway two years ago as a participant in the Classroom Connections program. Each high school student received a Tablet PC to use throughout the school year. Although the computers had warranty coverage, parents were asked to purchase insurance that would cover the computer if it were lost, stolen or damaged in a fire because those three items were not covered by the company warranty. Parents had the option to get no additional coverage, take out a private insurance policy or purchase the school district protection plan. Honomichl said the dilemma now is that the company warranty is no longer in effect and those computers covered solely by the school district protection plan aren't covered for accidental damage. He said that private insurance policies, like one through State Farm, can cover accidental damage or direct physical loss. Parents who bring in proof of private insurance coverage can get reimbursed for what they paid for the school protection plan. Without private coverage for accidental damage, Honomichl said, students could be faced with the burden of existing fines for damage to their computers. Some of those fines include $55 to replace a lost or damaged stylus; $70 to replace a keyboard; $300 to $600 for a broken screen; $55 to replace a damaged or lost power chord; $145 to replace a damaged or lost battery; or $1,336 to replace the entire computer.
