Is bicycling a possibility for commuting in Madison?

A story in today's Daily Leader describes how higher gas prices in the U.S. are boosting the sales of bicycles. Some workers in different parts of the country are starting to commute to work on their bicycles to save money on gasoline and get some exercise at the same time. Some cities, notably Portland, Ore., are building trails specifically for commuting. It caused us to wonder if commuting by bicycle in our area would make sense for some workers. In general, we believe the answer is yes. There are a number of factors in our favor. Our region's topography is relatively flat, so bicyclists wouldn't have to climb steep hills or ride too fast down hills. On most city streets, automobile traffic isn't so excessive to cause safety problems. Even running errands during lunch hour or after work could be done pretty easily in Madison on a bicycle with a pull-behind trailer. For people who live at Lake Madison and work in town, the new recreation trail would be perfect for commuting. At the moment, it would serve the north side of the lake very well, but other parts of the lake would need to ride on either Highway 19 or 34 to get to the trail. We think most employers, if asked, would put up bicycle racks or provide indoor space for bicycles during work hours. On the other hand, our winter climate is not perfect for bicycling. Snow and ice could cause tough conditions. Some cyclists wouldn't like the cold or wouldn't want to wear heavy clothes. How would it work for you? Since the League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-To-Work Day this Friday, perhaps we should give it a try.
