Aegis Therapies celebrates Active Aging Week with walk on Monday
By Staff 09/18/2009
Aegis Therapies will celebrate Active Aging Week Sept. 21-27 by hosting a special "Walk Your Age" event at Golden Living Center in Madison on Monday.

Aegis is the therapy services provider for Golden Living Center.

Developed by the International Council on Active Aging, Active Aging Week promotes the benefits of a healthy lifestyle by providing older adults the opportunity to experience activities and exercise in a safe, friendly and fun atmosphere.

During the "Walk Your Age," patients, therapists and other staff at Golden Living Center will join with others at nearly 1,000 locations nationwide to walk toward wellness on Monday at 9 a.m.

Each participant will walk a specific number of steps based on the year they were born. For example, if someone was born in 1938, they will be encouraged to walk 1,938 steps. The cumulative number of steps walked across the country will be totaled during the "Walk Your Age" event for Active Aging Week.

Participants in wheelchairs or otherwise unable to walk will engage in another physical activity. Their exercise during the event will be measured and calculated to approximate the number of steps they "walked."

"Our `Walk Your Age' event is a great opportunity to reinforce the importance of movement and activity in maintaining a good quality of life," said Jody Streff, rehabilitation program coordinator. "Regardless of a person's age or condition, they should strive to incorporate movement into their daily routine. Walking is something that almost everyone can do.

``As a therapy company, we are firm believers in exercise and an active lifestyle," Streff added. "Participating in Active Aging Week will be a fun and interactive way to support a great cause and promote good health. Our patients and team members are looking forward to this rewarding challenge."

The event will incorporate a special CD created by fitness expert Chris Freytag. She specifically designed the CD for Aegis Therapies using music that incorporates the correct number of beats per minute and minutes per song for walking.
